Mom’s Cinnamon Swirl Bread

My mom made this growing up and it was my favorite! Of course, I’ve continued the tradition and make this for my family. This bread is delicious as is but also makes incredible french toast!

Mom’s Orange Bread

  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp yeast
  • 1 1/2 cup warm orange juice
  • 5-6 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar, divided
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup soft butter
  • 1/4 cup grated orange peel
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cinnamon

In the bowl of your mixer add water yeast and 2 tsp sugar, and stir. Wait 5 minutes or until the mixture is nice and bubbly.

Add orange juice and 2 cups flour and mix well.

Add remaining sugar, salt butter, orange peel, and 3 more cups flour. Continue adding flour to make a soft dough that cleans the bowl when stirred.

Knead 5-8 minutes.

Place into a greased bowl, cover, and let rise about 1 1/2 hour or until doubled in size.

Meanwhile, in a small bowl mix 1 egg with 1 tsp water, and set aside. In another bowl mix together 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup cinnamon, set aside. Spray two loaf pans with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.

Pour dough onto a floured surface and divide into two.

Roll each out into a rectangle.

Brush each rectangle with the egg mixture.

Sprinkle half of the cinnamon and sugar mixture on each rectangle.

Roll up like a cinnamon roll, pinching the loose edges together. Fold as needed to fit into your loaf pan.

Cover and let rise until double.

Bake at 350 for 40-45 minutes.

Remove from over and let cool in pans for 5 minutes.

Remove from pan and brush with melted butter.
